Anybody use APi?

Posted by JazLyte - March 2nd, 2010

So I've been exploring this whole APi thing, it seems like a great idea to get some cash for your months of random labor, but umm... I don't quite get it. From what I've seen so far, it seems a bit inconsistent. For example, my short "Night With My Beloved" got 358 Ad impressions and earned a whopping 18 cents. My demo reel got 3,650 Ad impressions and made 26 cents. x_X how's a dude supposed to eat with this?

What exactly is the criteria for how much money you get anyway? Is there a views to money ratio? Is it different upon quality of the movie? Does it work if I post the flash on other sites with the same Ads? Anybody actually had SUCCESS with this? I'm totally fucking confused.

I think the results are more noticeable when applied to games because they tend to have the replay value associated with it. Movies are a hard sell, though im sure theres *some* movies out there that make decent bank. I think the main thing about the api to think about is that its an investment. Alot of people get turned off by that because theyd much rather have the instant payoff. Its just a different marketing platform. Not sure what the descrepancies youre seeing between your two movies tho.

I see... Yeah I know games pick up alot more replays, too, ugh... Maybe if I ever wanna make money off of my flash it'll have to be Meet n Fuck Necropolis

first off, don't count on the api to eat

second, games generally perform much better than movies when it comes to the api

third, you have to generate decent traffic to earn money. a few thousand impressions really isn't that much unfortunately :(

the criteria is based on a view/click ratio. just because you generate a lot of views doesn't mean anyone is actually clicking the ad. it also depends on what ads are currently running, and what other companies are paying to promote a certain ad.

I wouldn't really bother trying to figure out the details. keep placing the api in your content and maybe one of your movies will become incredibly popular and then you'll be glad the api is there. until then, it's not hurting anything either.

I suppose I could do that, my stuff generally stays in the 30,000-125,000 range, not quite sure how much that would've ment for my highest rated stuff, but I definitely could kick myself for just starting to use ads now...

aww look at that the roomies are synchronized responding

I'm not sure though, it takes hundreds of thousands of constant views to get a decent amount of dollars for me. The API for the two games the ad is in makes me around 40 a month and they are both played a lot (still split almost 50/50 for each).

I'm still confused about what the amount is you make from profile/other views on other submissions though. Maybe none, don't know...

Meh...that's something, 40 cheeseburgers is kool with me.

as fo money to views ratio: Fuck knows! I think it's a dice roll. Here's some numbers from me though:
Cannoncrotch 2,307,775 views $1,696.34
Crunchdown 1,267,561views $426.39
Co-operation 2,974,409views $120.10

Maybe it's got somethin to do with how many people click the ads? I don't know. Mystery!

Wow....that is random as hell...

1.000.000,000 OF VIEWS, 1 dollar

lol you're probably right too

For my whole body of work I got a whopping $1.19, I'm living the high life now I tell you what...

share nigga

Jazz. I suggest you start putting my testicles in your mouth before I tell Paperbat that you're having an affair with me.

>_> Nooooo! I'm on it, I'm on it! *gargle*

Well I started using APi december last year (I think), and I've made $211.42 all up. The impressions for each piece certainly aren't always the same in comparison to the money though. It all depends on the eCPM. I looked up what it meant once, but I don't remember anymore.

lol Thanks for your help

I don't know... I don't use the API in my clips, but I've made $18 all up from the ads on the pages where my content sits.

Thats cuz ur teh Boogley. I got 96 cents for mine.

that might help you mate, it helped me ^^

Holy fuck, that did help! Thanks man!

Well, I made 18 cent from ads on a submission that doesn't even have an ad in it! =)

I did too.... One of mine got $2.34 long before I knew flash ads existed....

It is however linked to the API...

We're putting together docs that should help explain some of this better but here is some general info:

1) The ads are performance based so it depends on what results the advertisers see. This may be clicks or other times may involve sign-ups and other referral activities.

2) Games do much better than movies, ESPECIALLY when they spread virally. We have seen some impressive examples of what happens when games spread - a small % of their revenue comes from views on NG compared to the web.

Movies generally don't spread far beyond NG and the YouTube rips don't help. You can improve your results if you cross-promote your work more. Check out the latest movies from Egoraptor and JohnnyUtah - they include cross-promotion for older movies at the end and getting very noticeable results from it.

3) A shocking number of Newgrounds visitors run adblock, which doesn't help.

4) Be sure ads are running at full 300x250 size. A lot of animators seem to think they can just shrink the ad and toss it in the corner (and I typed that before checking and confirming that yes, you did that too)... That won't get nearly the same results as a well presented, full-size ad.

Also don't hesitate to promote your user page. We are hoping user pages will become noticeably more profitable after our wide layout update. They currently run a low-performance ad size due to layout restrictions.

Oooookay, I get it... So basically I just need to make sure to spread mah animated chocolate all over the place and keep whoring out my other stuff to get more push. Interesting, I didn't know the Ad people really had tht active of a role in how successful you are with Api.

I like ads =3

I BET YOU DO MR. MAKE A GAME ABOUT TURTLES THAT TAKES OVER THE INTERNET.

your right, were the hell did the ghetto collection go?

Yeah. I agree with Coldreaver. You totally have to make another Ghetto Collection.

The Ghetto Collection is still there. Nobody is black enough to put shit up.

you need to get like a fookin million views to get one dollar
