I have a friend who went to university for animation, and now is working at a starbucks to make ends meet. If you actually have anyone pay you for your services then you can consider that a small step towards being considered a professional...
I wish things were different but I have the creeping feeling that 2d animation is going to die off in the next few years.
The only people that actually still animate in 2d seem to be those who create their own series then sell them off to a bigger network like mondo.tv whoring itself out to mtv, or Brendan Small selling his series to adult swim, to a lesser extent Frank Sudol selling his animated films to unearthed distribution.
Getting hired to do animation work is really a mixed bag and requires some sort of "in", in fact I think the "in" with someone in the industry is more important than having university diploma provided you already have the skills which you appear to have...
