NEW REVELATION

Posted by JazLyte - May 9th, 2008

I know I went on this rant recently, saying that my original animating style was crap and that it wasn't working and all this stuff, and that I was giving up my anime-inspired style for something else, but I realized that I'm sick of trying to jump through hoops. This is probably why I get artist/animator's block and want to start over all the time.

Well, I'm done. People can say what they want to about my style, I'm not changing it for people who really don't like my work and are just telling me what they like from other people. I have a few fans that enjoy my animating style, and really, it's not the style that matters it's what you do with it.
So I'm keeping the afro-anime style that moves at 24 frames-per-second with double-frames. People can tell me I'm copying the Boondocks with DevilSlayer & Nightgun if they want, since clearly the Boondocks is about four older teens slaying demons and fighting for religious freedom in a futuristic African civilization. Oh yeah that's right, it's black people in anime form and has some comedy elements, so that eliminates all differences. Oh well, eat a dick.

My previous work had it's problems, it was pretty stiff and one-dimensional. But I think I can take it to new levels now that I've started paying attention to outstanding works in other forms. I can still make lots of fluid, well drawn animation without letting go of detail, just look at Afro Samurai and Hayao Miyazaki's works. There's examples right here on Newgrounds, like Toniko-X and Zombie Pimp . There's really sweet, well animated anime as well as incredibly shitty anime, just like there's good and shitty western works. My style isn't going to make me a better animator, that's just making excuses, it'll be how much work I put into it.

Did I leave anything else out? Thanks to my homie SpikeVallentine for showing me that art isn't all about showing off and going through hoops to please people, it's about freedom and expression. He gave me some very good advice awhile back, and I won't let God down with my new projects or him. Expect more Afro-Anime in the future from me, only with more fluid, slick animation and better stories than ever before. Yea...I like that word... Afro Anime.

Also, before I go onto Nightgun, I'm making one last DevilSlayer cartoon that will stitch up all those terrible, cliched plot gaps from the first 3 cartoons so that I can move onto another better project in peace. Peace.

Good luck my friend. You know you always got my support.
Afro-Anime??? Ha..does that mean we're gonna see Mike in their now with the Afro of doom??? jk jk

Seriously though, don't get down on yourself. Then your right, you will keep getting that writers/animation block, and starting your series over and over and over again....and then apologize for messing it up.

Just animate for you. For your own meaning or fun or whatever. Forget everyone else(cept your homies) and do it for you.
Good luck man. PEACE!!!

Thank u ma Euro-American bruddah, I will do dat! And Mike already has the afro of doom in real life, Matt, don't incur it's wrath any more than necessary. It bit me while you and Amia weren't lookin when we went to see Iron Man, and frankly I'm terrified.

i am dr robotnik

Yes im talking bout asking S L Jackson to voice for you >=(

You have no idea how much I would LOOOOVVVGVE to have Sam Jackson VA for me.

Do your thing man! Don't let anybody tell you how you should animate or how your style should look, that should be a product of your own creativity not someone elses. Animator's block happens to the best of us so don't sweat it. I agree with dirtshake man, forget everyone elses opinions and just do things the way you want them to be done.
Good luck with DS and your other projects man!

Thanks man, 'preciate it!

The only reason an artist should cater to the demands of an audience is if he wants to expand that audience. But even so, that's only one of two ways to extend viewership. The other is to find your target audience. You have to find a way to make sure that all the people who CAN like your work will find out about it.

I love to entertain people so I do try my hardest to make sure what I create will please as many people as possible without really destroying the purpose of my art. It's an artist's dream to create something that everyone in the world will love without pandering to the demands of viewers, but that's rare.

So I guess the question is: are you an artist, or are you an entertainer? They're not mutually exclusive so it's possible to be both (mostly because we tend to be inspired by that which entertains us, and thus we tend to want to create things that are themselves very entertaining), but you'll find that they can confuse your goals if you do both. As an entertainer, you have to be happy altering your work in order to increase your audience. As an artist, you have to be happy creating for yourself and sharing with a much smaller audience.

My advice is to find a balance, or find peace with being one over the other.

Well said, man. That's what I'm going for, a balance between the two. I like for people to enjoy myself, but I'm all too aware that I can't please everybody.

My target audience? I want to make something that everyone can enjoy but also something that people who grew up in a urban environment can relate to.

Good for you man. Screw those bullshittin haters who don't like the style you chose. Its YOUR god damn series, YOUR god damn decision! They can either accept it or leave. The series basis is pretty damn good and I can't wait to see what happens next. Forget them haters. I LOVE YOU

lmao! Tell 'em man! I love you too XD

hey yungjazz hows breakin down tha race barrier goin for ya??

Still workin' on it man, lol.

christ is always in the lead!

Yezzir

I say fuck everyone do what you want. You come first. Your vision comes first.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to technical criticisms of course, but people who badger you over content are worthless human beings. Content is personal and debatable by taste. You can't improve it, because there are no criteria by which to define it as good or bad. You should spend your time making smooth and dynamic movements, nailing your timings, showing powerful impacts that grab a viewers attention. Just working out your animation principles. Art style is a term I liked to ignore anyway. Just draw, draw, draw. Learn what people look like, understand volume, and you will just naturally develop the rest man.

Anyway, best of luck. We've had our disagreements, but I'm not so shallow that I can't be rooting for ya anyway.

Oh yea definitely, there's always improvements to be made, nobody's beyond that. I just don't want to be fretting all the time about whether or not people will like it on the surface, but if I focus on quality, I shouldn't have any problems. Thanks for the advice.

I don't know why you didn't like your style in the first place?
i like your style better than mine...shit.
[did that helped?]

But seriously, you have your styled already.
Just work on what your missing, and by the sounds of it its just plot cause your animation is one of the slickest around.

Thanks man, I appreciate the compliments. The plot is actually a main problem I think, and maybe my own laziness, because if the plot's gripping enough, people will wait for progress to come and I can have lots of fBf and still be detailed.

Oh and don't stress man, you're getting better, my stuff's not better than yours, it's just only your second year. That practice is important.

LMAO! This made me laugh. "Eat a dick" HAHAHA!

Anyway, I would have to say that if the way you make things makes you happy, that is all that matters. No matter what you do, people will always tell you to do something different.

Smoothing your animation out is a good idea, of course, but changing it altogether? Naw, don't do that. Not during a series, at least. It's totally distracting (see "Unforgotten Realms").

That is true man. Can't please everybody.

Hey thanks for refering to me man, that's pretty awesome.

I think the most important thing in animation is what I call the "chill factor". Everyone who appreciates animation knows what "the chill" is. When they see something so inspiring that it tingles their spine, and sends chills all over the body right to the fingertips. For me, it still happens every time I watch certain episodes of my favourite anime. I think everyone's goal as an animator is to create work that will provoke from others, this magnificent chill. For some, the chill is better than an orgasm.

Oohhh yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. It's that feeling I get watching Samurai Champloo, Boondocks, Pulp Fiction, even some of your stuff heh. I'm gonna keep that in mind while animating... >B)

i like your style dude, i will wait for your new animation

Thanks man

i have a big hairy bum

I know man. I know.

Its all good just do your thing, whatever you want, and chances are itll turn out great.
Oh, and its not "a few fans".

I'm hoping so...

Hellz yea homie do yo thug thizzle!!! I always liked yo style anyway. It's people like you that made me get into flash animation, but I'm still learning the basics soo...yea. Afro Anime is da shizz-nit!!!

Lol, "24 frames-per-second with double-frames." I totally do that too.

If you just live life the way it make sense to you, you'll be fine. You don't wanna go through the experience I had to.

Definitely. And do you mean your experiences here on NG? 'Cause it looks like your stuff does pretty well.

I'd like to add that Boondocks is a terribly overrated show.
That is all.

It's all about what you like. To me, it's got great visuals, hilarious writing and a few real messages if you pay attention, so I love it. But to each his own. It just gets kind of irritating hearing people talk about it everytime they talk about my stuff.

just keep doing what you love to do.

let the hypocrites sort themselves out. if you love what you are doing it will reflect in your work., and people will notice

I will. I'll just worry about makin it better.

Yo jazz, it's dent! Glad you're keeping the series going, can't wait for the next installment. Take care. peace.

Thanks Dent, 'preciate it man
